Decline of the world record attempt :-( (I am sad)

Finally, I fixed it to visit a sports doctor to ask him for medical advise for my world record attempt.
Without a health examination I would not enhance my training in order to take no healthy risks.
For 10 days I have been informed by the Guinness Book that the existing world record in continuous cycling is 135h and not 85h anymore.

The sports doctor replied that such athletic challenge is bad to support.
He advised to cancel this attempt. The risk during the attempt and resulting damages is incalculable high.

After due consideration and serious discussion with my team partner I decided to cancel the world record attempt before the expedition.
We start preparing the expedition in detail.

Many thanks for your understanding.

World Record Attempt: Training Period 3 (of 5)

]I am really sorry for the delay. But my training periods became much longer and tougher so that I have less time to write. (I have not fixed it yet to write on my indoor bike)
For your information, in June 2008 shall be my world record attempt in continuous cycling.

At the moment, I am training in phase 3 (of 5) of my Ultra-Endurance program.
This means that I ride at least 60h per week (outdoor and on my indoor bike) by less than 5h (avg.) sleep per day. I must learn to sleep less in order to train longer and to prepare my body on sleepless, riding nights. (I must fix it to ride 3 nights without sleep during the world record attempt.)

At the moment I can use my working time as regeneration. In 2 weeks, I will stop my current work as consultant at Fortis Bank (BE). Afterwards, phase 4 of my training plan will start. Further information soon.
I am tired …Zzzz

Lovely greetings from Belgium

Ride from Berlin (DE) to Leuven (BE) via Wiesbaden (DE)

After my successful ride from Leuven (BE) to Berlin (DE) in two 30h non-stop rides I want to cycle back via Wiesbaden (DE) and trying to perform a non-stop ride of minimum 40h.

======================================================
1. Stage
======================================================

Non-stop Ride: approx. 700km in 44,5h

Route:
Berlin (DE) - Fulda (DE)

Weather
:
cloudy, strong headwind, and strong continuous rain during both nights

Resume
:
After 80km cycling with strong headwind I became tired and exhausted. A chocolate could help getting new motivation.
After 25 hours I crossed the mountain range Harz (DE). Don’t ask me why I could continue cycling in the mountains after these exertions.
During the second night I was crossing the mountain range
Thuringian Forest (DE) which is my favourite mountain range in Germany.
Unfortunately, I could not enjoy it anymore since my legs were too heavy.
Finally, after 44,5h continuous cycling I stopped because of mental problems (too tired). For safety reasons I decided to take the train from Fulda (DE) to Wiesbaden (DE).

I am really happy about my ultra-endurance training success!

======================================================
One day break ======================================================
Place:
Wiesbaden (DE) in my flat share

Resume
:
Time to sleep like a log and to eat some wild pigs.

======================================================
2. Stage:

======================================================

Non-stop Ride: approx. 500km in 25h

Route:
Wiesbaden (DE) - Leuven (BE)

Weather
:
sunshine, no wind & no rain (sunny weather … the first time during my holidays!)

Resume
:
Oh lucky me… I had the first time sunny and calm weather during my 2 weeks holidays on bike.
I ignored the previous exertions and cycled faster than normal. After 10 hours, I realised making a big mistake. The legs became again heavy.
During the night, I got lost on the way to
Netherlands. After 2h odyssey I stood before the NATO Airbase.
Strange & funny.
Eventually, I arrived in Maastricht (NL) in the crack of dawn. Since then the tour became easily feeling the home in
Leuven (BE).
Finally, I reached my home after 25h at
12:45.
And 2h later? I cannot remember. I slept. ..

Camp & Ride - from Leuven (BE) to Berlin (DE)

The ride from Leuven (BE) to Berlin (DE) with my camping stuff and my compass:
Finally, I arrive in
Berlin (DE) after 1.400km in 4 1/2 days. Oh, I am too happy with my performance!

======================================================
1. Stage (starting on Saturday at
15:00)
======================================================

Approx. 550km in 31 hours

Weather:
downwind; second half with strong continuous rain

Topography
:
first half in plain area; second half in the mountains

Resume
:
I am satisfied … after 300km no problems continuing cycling in the mountains. Finally, after 31h I look for my place in my sleeping bag…

======================================================
2. Stage (after 12 hours sleep)
======================================================

Approx. 650km in 32 hours

Weather:
light downwind; dry

Topography:
first half in the mountains (ca. 250km); second half in plain area

Resume:
mental problems after 500km not finding the bridge to cross the river Elbe (DE). Eventually, I realised after 650km that I cannot reach my target Berlin (DE). Approx. 200km left. I decide to sleep and to continue tomorrow.

======================================================
3. Stage (after 8 hours sleep)
======================================================

Reaching the target after 180km in 9 hours on Wednesday at 19:00

Weather:
light downwind; dry and second half continuous rain

Topography:
plain

Resume:
It was the most difficult stage. Everything hurts and I feel me K.O. I had been cycling in the red area during these 8 hours.
It shall be the most invaluable training unit.

Comment to the world record attempt in continuous cycling

I have found an article to the existing world record in continuous cycling of 85 hours (press: USA magazine):
www.usatoday.com/news/offbeat/2007-01-14-stationary-biker_x.htm

After my research, there are 2 criteria to be fulfilled:
- minimum distance: 20 km per hour
- breaks: 15 min break every 8 hours

I have contacted the Guinness Book to receive the exact rules for this record.
When I have bad luck then I must wait 2 months for their reply.

Note:
Regarding the minimum distance, this means I cannot use my favourite spinning technique Stand & Climb which requires a high resistance but a low speed (uphill).
